Raymond Park
About Raymond Park
Historic Origins
Situated in Cambridge's Neighborhood Nine, Raymond Park (also known as Corcoran Field) is a green haven with roots dating back to 1915. What's fascinating is that this 2.8-acre park sits where a clay pit once operated - a nod to North Cambridge's brickmaking past. Today, it functions as both a park and a neighborhood gathering place where nature, play, and relaxation intersect.
Play Areas & Sports
The Corcoran Playground forms the central area for families. With its mix of climbing structures, swings, slides, and a sandbox, it accommodates kids of all ages - though the little ones seem to especially enjoy it. Got a toddler? This might become your regular hangout spot.
If you're more into sports, you'll appreciate the two basketball courts and a softball field that anchor the athletic offerings. The open fields don't just sit there either - they transform into impromptu soccer pitches and dog playgrounds, while the winding paths invite walkers, joggers, and kids just learning to ride bikes.
Natural Retreat
What we appreciate about Raymond Park is its balance of activity and tranquility. The greenery provides a quiet retreat from city life, useful for those moments when you need a break. Garden enthusiasts tend to the community garden plots, growing everything from daisies to tomatoes, while the mature trees provide welcome shade for picnics or a bit of birdwatching.
Come winter, the small hill transforms into a perfect sledding spot for the younger crowd. The path winding around this hill offers a particularly nice stroll, however fair warning - the park can get pretty busy when the weather's nice.
Practical Amenities
You can find several picnic tables scattered throughout, making it easy to enjoy an outdoor lunch or small gathering. Need a restroom? Porta-potties are available on-site - not glamorous, but definitely practical for longer visits.
Just keep in mind that while Raymond Park offers a lot, its cozy size means it can feel crowded during peak times, especially on sunny weekends.
Community Spirit
What really makes this park special is the community around it. The Friends of Raymond Park (FORP) volunteer group brings the place to life with movie nights, holiday celebrations, and block parties that help neighbors connect.
Currently, the park is undergoing some much-needed renovations to address wear and tear, but the good news is that the upgrades aim to enhance the space while preserving its character. If you're planning future visits, note that the renewal project should be completed by 2025.
