Shedd Park
About Shedd Park
Recreational Facilities
Spanning 50 acres, Shedd Park offers recreational activities for visitors of all interests. The baseball fields are meticulously maintained and host everything from casual youth games to competitive league matchups throughout the season. There's something special about watching a local game unfold on these community diamonds.
Fancy a game of tennis? The lighted tennis courts let you extend your rally well into the evening. Nearby, the basketball courts welcome players of all skill levels - from weekend warriors to serious ballers. During summer's heat, kids flock to the splash pad where water shoots playfully from the ground, creating an ideal cool-down spot. It's completely fenced for safety, however keep in mind the concrete can get slippery when wet (as wet concrete tends to do!).
Park Amenities
The playground features all the classics - swings and slides - plus a popular zip line that children enjoy. We love how they've thoughtfully designed separate areas for the little ones, with bark mulch cushioning potential tumbles throughout.
When hunger strikes, numerous picnic areas with tables await your sandwiches and snacks. Some tables offer welcome shade coverage - a blessing on those scorching summer days. For the blanket-picnic purists, there's a sprawling open field fantastic for spreading out.
The park's pavilion doubles as a stage for community events and concerts, providing shelter alongside the covered picnic areas when the weather doesn't cooperate. You'll discover restrooms in the building near the entrance, but they're occasionally closed (thankfully, portable toilets are usually available as backup).
Walking and Fitness Options
The looping walking path that winds through portions of the park has become a favorite among local fitness enthusiasts. Regardless of whether you're into gentle walking, steady jogging, or heart-pumping runs, this track accommodates all paces and ambitions.
With its open layout and various facilities, you can find different workout options while enjoying the natural surroundings.
History and Legacy
This green oasis exists thanks to Freeman B. Shedd, a local philanthropist who gifted the land to Lowell in 1910. His forward-thinking donation came with one significant condition: the space must forever remain dedicated to recreation for the community.
After the Shedd family passed, their estate continued supporting the park's development. The Shedd Park Field House, now known as the John D. Lord Pavilion, was built in 1927 and is part of the park's long history.
Community Significance
Set in the Belvidere neighborhood and bordered by Rogers Street (Route 38), Boylston Street, and Knapp Avenue, Shedd Park is one of Greater Lowell's major green spaces.
All year long, the park buzzes with community gatherings, including the annual Shedd Park Cyclo-Cross bicycle race that draws competitors and spectators alike. Summer sometimes brings free lunch programs for children, adding to the park's community-centered spirit.
As one of Lowell's largest parks, this expansive green space bridges history and modern recreation. The park's various amenities attract many different visitors - from morning joggers to family reunions - each using the space in their own way.
