Blunt Park
About Blunt Park
A Bit of History
Located in Springfield, Massachusetts, Blunt Park spans a generous 162.1 acres serving the McKnight, Bay, and Pine Point neighborhoods. Established back in 1928, this green oasis has deep roots in the city's story - the front section of the park was actually once part of Springfield's almshouse property.
Nature's Playground
If you're looking to reconnect with nature, Blunt Park offers well-kept paths and trails that meander through scenic landscapes. Whether you're in the mood for a contemplative morning walk or an energizing run, you'll find yourself surrounded by open green spaces and tranquil wooded areas that make it easy to forget you're still in the city.
Get Your Game On
One thing that makes Blunt Park special is its variety of recreational offerings. During winter months, the ice rink becomes a hub of activity for skating enthusiasts bundled up against the cold. When summer rolls around, the John H. Thomas Memorial Swimming Pool opens its gates (typically from late June to mid-August), offering a refreshing escape from the heat.
In 2012, the park honored a community figure when its playing fields were dedicated as the Ernie Smith Fields after Ernest D. "Ernie" Smith. These fields continue to bring neighbors together through sports and outdoor activities.
Fresh Additions
Blunt Park hasn't been standing still. Recent years have seen thoughtful renovations that keep the park relevant for new generations. Among the most welcome improvements is the new playground equipment, with structures carefully designed for different age groups. Parents can relax while watching their little ones climb, slide, and make new friends in these safe, engaging spaces.
With its impressive size and diverse amenities, Blunt Park is an important green space in Springfield's park system.
