About Forest Park
A Historic Urban Oasis
Located in Springfield sits Forest Park, a sprawling 735-acre location that's been a local treasure since 1884. Perched above the Connecticut River, this park isn't just any green space - it's one of the largest urban parks in the country. Over the decades, it's grown bit by bit through generous donations and strategic land purchases.
The park's design is often attributed to Frederick Law Olmsted, the celebrated landscape architect behind Central Park and many other American green spaces, but the credit more accurately belongs to his firm - Olmsted himself did not design Forest Park directly.
Natural Landscape
Wander through Forest Park and you'll discover a little bit of everything: winding trails that disappear into the woods, views that make you pause, and serene lakes and ponds ideal for quiet reflection. Pecousic Brook meanders through more than half of the park's south side, creating a peaceful natural retreat complete with walking paths and charming bridges that seem plucked from a storybook.

Keep your eyes peeled as you explore - the park is home to an impressive variety of birds and wildlife. You might just spot something special if you take your time.
Notable Attractions
Beyond trees and trails, the Forest Park Zoo houses a collection of exotic and native animals that's worth exploring. History buffs might appreciate knowing that the park contains America's first public municipal swimming pool, which has been making summers better since 1899.
One of the more unexpected things you'll come across is an exhibit of ancient dinosaur tracks. The Connecticut River Valley has long been recognized as rich paleontological territory, and the tracks preserved here offer a tangible connection to that prehistoric landscape - an unusual contrast to the surrounding urban setting.

Gardens and Historical Elements
If you appreciate thoughtfully designed green spaces, the rose garden offers a fragrant respite, while the aquatic gardens transport you to Asia with their serene design and water elements.
History is woven around the park's landscape. You'll come across an impressive statue created by Peter Wolf Toth as part of the Trail of the Whispering Giants, and a replica of Everett Barney's mansion that connects you to Springfield's past. Among the quieter monuments is the JFK Eternal Flame, a flame that burns around the clock in memory of President John F. Kennedy - easy to walk past if you don't know to look for it, but worth a moment of reflection when you do.
Seasonal Events
When winter rolls around, Forest Park transforms into a magical wonderland with Bright Nights, a high-tech lighting display that draws visitors from near and far. The 2.6-mile trail features elaborate, animated light displays that have become not just a park tradition, but a popular regional attraction.
Community Resource
At its heart, Forest Park is an important space for Springfield. It's where families spend time together, runners get their exercise, and nature lovers enjoy some tranquility in the city.
