Five Mile Pond Park
About Five Mile Pond Park
Natural Retreat
Found in a bustling section of Springfield just north of Route 20A, Five Mile Pond Park centers around a gorgeous 48-acre spring-fed pond. With an average depth of 12 feet and plunging to 35 feet at its deepest point, this natural corner offers a tranquil escape from city life. We've found the peaceful water views and serene atmosphere provide a wonderful contrast to the urban landscape surrounding it - it feels like a little pocket of calm in the middle of the city rush.
Get Outside & Play
The pond is really the heart of the park's activities, fantastic for fishing, boating, and swimming. If you enjoy fishing, the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife stocks the pond with rainbow trout twice yearly (spring and fall). Beyond trout, the waters are home to plenty of bluegill and bass, making this a popular spot for anglers looking to unwind with a line in the water.
There's a beach area right by the pond where you can swim and soak up some sun during the warmer months, however it's worth checking ahead as swimming availability sometimes changes due to staffing. Kayaking on the calm waters is another enjoyable way to spend an afternoon here.
Park Features
The landscape offers a nice mix of wooded areas and open green spaces, creating diverse natural surroundings to explore. You'll discover well-maintained hiking trails winding through the park, several picnic areas great for a leisurely outdoor meal, and playgrounds where kids can burn off energy.
Note that restroom facilities are limited to portable toilets in the parking lot. If you're bringing your own watercraft, there's a convenient boat ramp for easy access to the pond.
The parking lot received a recent upgrade, but you might notice some potholes at the entrance that could use a little attention.
Good To Know
Five Mile Pond Park falls under Springfield city management, meaning all city rules apply while you're visiting. The park gets quite busy during warm weather, with fishing and picnicking drawing the biggest crowds.
Access sometimes gets limited due to staffing shortages or seasonal closures, so it's smart to check current status before heading out. No matter if you're looking for a morning jog, an afternoon of fishing, or just a quiet moment by the water, this urban space offers a refreshing dose of nature in the heart of Springfield.
