About Calhoun Park
A Glimpse into the Past
Dating back to the 1880s, Calhoun Park started life as a simple walking park for nearby residents. What makes this spot special is how it's tucked among beautiful Victorian-era homes - you'll spot Queen Anne and stick-style architecture all around, giving you a real sense of the neighborhood's historical character.
Where to Find It
This cozy 2.5-acre green space takes up a full block in a residential area, sitting right at the corner of Dwight Street and Jefferson Avenue. If you're familiar with the area, it's not far from Baystate Hospital. Don't worry about parking - there's street parking available when you visit.
The Park's Charm
One of the first things you'll notice are the large shade trees that create a cool, peaceful atmosphere. Being nestled in a residential neighborhood makes this park a natural gathering spot for locals looking for a bit of outdoor time.
Things to Do
If you're feeling active, head to the basketball courts or try your hand at the handball court - a feature that's been part of the park for years. On hot days, the splash pad with water jets is great for kids who want to cool off.
There's also a playground area where children can climb and explore, plus open green spaces that work perfectly for throwing a frisbee, having a picnic, or just lounging with a good book. And yes, you can bring your four-legged friends along - the park is dog-friendly.
Looking Forward
Calhoun Park has been getting some well-deserved attention lately. The City of Springfield has directed funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) toward improving the park's features. The goal is to create better recreational opportunities for everyone, regardless of age or ability. You might notice some construction work happening - that's all part of these enhancement efforts.
