About Newton Hill at Elm Park

A Slice of History on the Hill

Found in Worcester, Massachusetts, Newton Hill spans 41 acres as the western portion of Elm Park, separated from its eastern counterpart by Park Avenue. While the main section of Elm Park boasts a more polished look, Newton Hill has kept its wild side since joining the park family in 1888 - providing woodland space right in the city.

Trails to Wander

With over 4 miles of hiking trails weaving through its urban forest, Newton Hill offers nature trails without leaving the city limits. The paths cater to everyone from casual strollers to dedicated hikers, with varied difficulty levels and some pretty sweet views of Worcester along the way.

Make your way to the hill's summit and you'll discover the Edward Winslow Lincoln Memorial Grove - a living tribute planted in 2014 featuring 15 fruit trees arranged in a circle. Local Doherty Memorial High School students joined forces with the Worcester Tree Initiative to create this special spot that adds a touch of tranquility to the hilltop.

The trails wind through the woods, though if you're bringing your four-legged friend, keep an eye out for broken glass that occasionally turns up on some paths. The park does have regular patrols, including officers on horseback, helping keep things safe and clean.

Play Your Way

Since 2009, disc golf enthusiasts have enjoyed the hill's 18-hole course that meanders through the woods. Open to everyone, this course has hilly terrain and features two layouts for different skill levels.

If you're looking to break a sweat, check out the 12-station fitness circuit added in 2015. These versatile exercise stations can adapt to different workouts, making them accessible whether you're just starting your fitness journey or you're already a gym regular.

The park rounds out its offerings with tennis courts and a basketball court, giving you plenty of options to stay active. And yes, there are public restrooms available - always a practical plus for any park visit.

Community at Its Core

Since 2001, the Friends of Newton Hill at Elm Park have poured their energy into making this space even better. This dedicated volunteer group has spearheaded improvements around the park and organized community events including summer concerts in nearby Newton Square.

Bring Your Pup

Newton Hill welcomes dogs, making it a popular spot for local pet owners seeking a natural environment for walks. The wooded trails provide plenty of interesting scents and sights for curious canines, though it's best to keep them leashed and stay alert for any trail hazards.
