About the Location

Historic Background

Newton Hill is a 41-acre section of Elm Park located in Worcester, Massachusetts. Added to Elm Park proper in 1888, it forms the western portion of the park across Park Avenue. Unlike the more manicured eastern section of Elm Park, Newton Hill maintains a more natural, wooded character.

Trail System

The hill features over 4 miles of hiking trails that wind through its urban forest, providing visitors with opportunities for exercise and nature exploration within the city limits. The trails vary in difficulty, accommodating different fitness levels and offering scenic views of the surrounding area.

At the summit of Newton Hill, visitors will find the Edward Winslow Lincoln Memorial Grove. Planted in 2014 with assistance from Doherty Memorial High School students and the Worcester Tree Initiative, this living memorial consists of 15 fruit trees encircling the hilltop.

Recreational Facilities

Newton Hill has been developed to offer a variety of recreational activities. In 2009, an 18-hole disc golf course was installed, winding through the wooded areas and providing a unique outdoor activity free and open to the public.

In 2015, a 12-station fitness circuit was added, featuring paracourse style equipment adaptable to different exercises and accessible to people of various fitness levels.

Community Involvement

The Friends of Newton Hill at Elm Park, a volunteer group founded in 2001, has been instrumental in maintaining and improving this section of the park. They have organized various events and programs, including summer concerts in the adjacent Newton Square, and have fostered numerous improvements to enhance the park's recreational value.
