Running 15 acres along the Huron River from Maiden Lane to Broadway Street, Riverside Park sits just north of downtown Ann Arbor and offers a genuine sense of escape without leaving the city. The water sets the tone here - tranquil, unhurried, and good for spotting local wildlife.

The walking trails run alongside the Huron River, good for a morning stroll or an afternoon wander. There's a certain peacefulness to walking with the river flowing nearby. Scattered throughout are grassy areas ideal for picnics or reading.

Trees provide welcome patches of shade during Michigan's warmer months, making this a comfortable retreat even in summer heat.

One of the park's highlights is its river access points, where you can dip your toes in the water or simply sit and watch the current flow by. No official swimming areas exist, but natural water play is definitely an option.

If you're bringing little ones, the playground offers climbing structures that will keep them entertained, along with a sand area that's excellent for creative play. Nearby, a pavilion provides shelter for picnics regardless of whether the sun is shining or rain is falling.

Benches scattered across the park - some facing the playground, others oriented toward the river - invite you to sit, breathe, and take in the surroundings.

Good to Know

The park does have restroom facilities that are well-maintained during warmer months but closed during winter. This makes longer visits much more comfortable when nature calls.

While the park is generally clean, you might occasionally encounter areas where dog owners haven't been as considerate as they should be with cleanup.

Practical Matters

Parking is limited to a small gravel lot on Canal Street. If that's full, University of Michigan lots nearby offer weekend and after-hours options - just be sure to check the parking restriction signs to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Important safety note: the river currently has a PFAS "Do Not Eat Fish" advisory due to contamination. The water's pretty, but its fish aren't for dinner.
