Park Overview

What started as Grand Rapids' first water reservoir in 1874 was renamed in 1932 to honor Captain Charles Belknap, a Civil War veteran, and has since evolved into one of the city's most cherished green spaces. Today, Belknap Park spreads across 25 acres atop a 160-foot bluff in the Belknap Lookout neighborhood.

From this natural balcony, you'll enjoy panoramic views of downtown Grand Rapids and the winding Grand River below - a sight that never gets old, especially at sunset.

Recreational Facilities

If you're into pickleball, the park has excellent facilities. The park's 21 dedicated outdoor pickleball courts attract players from across Michigan. Complete with permanent lines, nets, and excellent lighting for evening games, the courts are thoughtfully arranged to accommodate players of all skill levels.

Not a pickleball fan? No worries. Belknap Park also houses baseball and softball fields where community games regularly unfold. And when winter blankets the park in snow, those hills transform into popular sledding spots where you can channel your inner child regardless of your actual age.

Walking Trails and Views

The walking trails here aren't your flat, easy-going paths - they come with challenging inclines that'll get your heart pumping. Consider it nature's StairMaster with a reward at the top: spectacular views of Grand Rapids spreading out below you.

The park's spacious grassy areas make perfect spots for spreading out a blanket, unpacking a picnic, or simply lying back to watch clouds drift by against the backdrop of the city skyline.

Events and Music Festivals

When summer rolls around, Belknap Park hosts several outdoor concerts and festivals. The natural contours of the land create a kind of amphitheater setting that's great for the Breakaway Music Festival and Upheaval Festival that call this park home. These multi-day events spread across multiple stages, drawing music enthusiasts from all corners of Michigan and beyond.

Amenities and Facilities

Practicality matters too - you'll discover portable restroom facilities near the pickleball courts and during special events. As for parking, it's available but can fill up quickly, especially during tournaments, festivals, or sunny weekend afternoons.

The City of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department keeps everything running smoothly here, from maintaining the grounds to organizing community programs throughout the year. The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 10PM - plenty of time to enjoy everything this elevated oasis has to offer.
