Historic Monument

Positioned in Grand Rapids' Heritage Hill neighborhood, Foster Park is a charming triangular green space that offers a quiet escape from the bustle of city life. This pocket-sized park on Cherry Street SE might be small, but it packs a meaningful historical punch.

At the heart of the park stands "The Hiker," a compelling statue honoring Michigan veterans who served in the Spanish-American War (1898-1902). Created by talented sculptor Theo Alice Ruffles Kitson, this monument has its own journey through Grand Rapids history. Originally dedicated in 1928, it called Lookout Park home before finding its way to Foster Park in 1957.

There's a nice local connection, too - the statue stands proudly atop a boulder that was actually dredged from the Grand River itself.
