Foster Park

Historic Monument

At the heart of Foster Park stands "The Hiker," a compelling statue honoring Michigan veterans who served in the Spanish-American War (1898-1902). Created by sculptor Theo Alice Ruffles Kitson, the monument was originally dedicated in 1928 at Lookout Park before finding its way to this charming triangular green space on Cherry Street SE in Grand Rapids' Heritage Hill neighborhood in 1957.

There's a nice local connection, too - the statue stands atop a boulder that was actually dredged from the Grand River itself. The park itself is pocket-sized, but it packs a meaningful historical punch.
