About the Location

A Vibrant Urban Oasis

Tucked in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan lies Rosa Parks Circle, a 3.5-acre urban park with a story to tell. This distinctive city park was designed by Maya Lin, the renowned architect behind the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Completed in 2001 as part of Grand Rapids' urban renewal efforts, the park has since become a popular downtown gathering space.

At its heart sits "Ecliptic," a circular amphitheater that functions as the park's centerpiece. With its concentric granite ellipses (upgraded from the original concrete during renovations), it's a space that invites you to pause and appreciate thoughtful urban design.

A Park for All Seasons

What makes Rosa Parks Circle special is how it changes with Michigan's seasons. Lin cleverly incorporated water in all three states: liquid, vapor, and solid. During warm months, you'll find the space alive with concerts and community gatherings. But when winter blankets Grand Rapids, the park transforms into a magical ice skating rink that draws thousands.

Look down while you skate and you might notice something extraordinary - 166 fiber optic lights embedded beneath the ice. These aren't random; they're actually a map of the night sky as it appeared over Grand Rapids at midnight on January 1, 2000 - a unique celestial element to the skating experience.

The ice rink won't break your budget either. For about $4 (including skate rental), you can glide across this starry surface while holiday music plays and festive lights twinkle around you.

A Meaningful Tribute

The park honors Rosa Parks, the civil rights icon who called Michigan home for many years. Since 2010, a statue of Parks has stood at the corner of Monroe Center Street NW and Monroe Avenue NW, a quiet reminder of courage and the ongoing journey toward social justice.

Where Grand Rapids Comes Together

On any given day, Rosa Parks Circle pulses with city life. It's where Grand Rapids celebrates, relaxes, and connects. Summer evenings bring swing dancing on Tuesdays, with live music drawing both seasoned dancers and curious first-timers.

The park hosts everything from food truck gatherings to free concerts and cultural festivals. During ArtPrize, the city's renowned art competition, the circle becomes a central hub for creativity and conversation.

Over the years, development has grown around the park. Restaurants, galleries, and shops have opened nearby, and the Grand Rapids Art Museum now stands as its neighbor, showing the connection between public spaces and urban development.

Comfortable by Design

You'll discover all the essentials here: clean restrooms, water fountains, and plenty of places to sit. The grassy knolls along Monroe Avenue offer shaded spots to unwind, while picnic tables scattered around the circle make it easy to enjoy a casual meal outdoors.

On hot summer days, a small fountain provides a cooling mist. And yes, you can bring your dog - just remember to keep them leashed.

Fresh Updates for a Beloved Space

Recent renovations have given the park some well-deserved TLC. The stage has been upgraded, new granite and wood benches installed, and the restrooms improved. Additional shade trees have enhanced the landscaping, making hot Michigan summers more bearable.

These thoughtful improvements have only strengthened Rosa Parks Circle's role as Grand Rapids' gathering place - a space where artistic vision meets everyday urban life to create something truly special.
