About the Location

A Piece of Lansing History

Tucked between Capitol and Washington Avenues just north of Lansing Community College sits Durant Park, a three-acre historic green space with deeper roots than you might guess at first glance. Back around 1920, William C. Durant - yes, the same industrialist who founded General Motors - established this little urban oasis.

Durant actually bought this city block in 1919 and brought in Kalamazoo landscape designer Charles Maxson to transform it into something special. In 1921, Durant gifted the park to Lansing, and the city celebrated with a proper community parade on June 23. Talk about a housewarming party!

Cars, History, and a Bit of Drama

This park has a fascinating connection to Michigan's automotive story. Before they became competitors with their own car companies, Ransom Olds (the Oldsmobile guy) and Durant were business partners. That little piece of industrial history adds some character to your peaceful afternoon in the park.

Over the decades, the park has evolved alongside Lansing's ongoing revitalization efforts. The neighborhood around it has transformed too - those old buildings that once housed grocery stores have found new purposes for modern times.

What You'll Find There

At the heart of Durant Park sits a circular fountain basin that anchors the space. Winding concrete paths lead you through flowerbeds and under the canopy of mature trees that have witnessed decades of Lansing life.

You can find plenty of seating areas scattered throughout - ideal for taking a breather, enjoying your lunch, or simply watching the world go by. Those big old trees create some seriously welcome shade during Michigan's summer heat.

Fun for Everyone

If you're bringing kids along, the modern playground offers up-to-date equipment for various ages. Swings and interactive play structures keep the little ones entertained while you relax nearby.

The park also features an open-air theater space where community performances sometimes take place. And yes, there's a drinking fountain - always a practical touch when you're out exploring.

Easy to Enjoy

The flat, paved trails make Durant Park accessible for just about everyone, whether you're taking a quick lunchtime stroll or a leisurely evening walk. Its status as a Michigan Historic Site reminds us that we're walking on ground that matters to our state's story.

If you can, try to visit during spring or fall when the trees put on their seasonal color shows. While it may not be the biggest park around, Durant Park offers a meaningful retreat from city life - a place where history, leisure, and community blend together in just three acres of downtown Lansing.
