About the Location
A Pocket Park Escape
Tucked away at the corner of Mt. Vernon Avenue and Moorland Street in East Lansing's Southeast Marble neighborhood, Hidden River Park demonstrates how good things can come in small packages. At just .2 acres, it's the tiniest park in East Lansing, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm. Since its official dedication in 2007, this little green haven has offered a peaceful escape where nature, play, and relaxation come together beautifully.
The park's name has a bit of local history behind it - it's actually named after an underground tributary that once flowed freely above ground through the area.
Natural Playground Elements
Forget plastic slides and metal jungle gyms - Hidden River Park embraces the natural playground concept with open arms. The thoughtfully designed space features environmentally friendly elements including a winding limestone pathway loop that invites leisurely strolls. Kids particularly love the sand play area with climbing stones where they can let their imaginations run wild while connecting with nature.
Majestic spruce trees dot the landscape, casting cool shade and adding to the tranquil atmosphere. No matter if you're looking to relax with a good book or watch the little ones play, the park's benches, playful swing set, and picnic tables (which locals often move under the trees on sunny days) provide comfortable spots to enjoy this little piece of nature.
Community Involvement
This park resulted from neighbors coming together. During its development, the space benefitted from strong community participation, with local leaders working hand-in-hand with the city to bring this green oasis to life.
Over the years, Hidden River Park has become a place where neighbors connect. The park hosts casual neighborhood picnics, ice cream socials, and small gatherings. There's something refreshingly simple about this space - its modest size and minimalist amenities create a wonderful low-key retreat for nearby residents seeking a moment of peace or for children to explore and play in a natural setting.
