Recreation and Sports
Ranney Park offers an array of amenities that cater to both nature enthusiasts and sports lovers. It features winding trails, boardwalks that connect small islands, and various overlooks.
Active visitors can enjoy the skate park, tennis courts, handball courts, and spaces for softball. The park is equipped with restrooms, drinking fountains, an electronic scoreboard, and concessions.
Environmental Design
Covering 11 acres, this thoughtfully designed multi-use community park integrates both recreational and ecological functions. It was transformed by the Ingham County Drain Commissioner to serve as a green infrastructure site aimed at managing stormwater and reducing pollution in the Red Cedar River.
The park is part of the broader Montgomery Drain watershed improvement initiative.
Water Features
The centerpiece of Ranney Park is its stormwater management system, with a striking 160-foot-long water quality wall. Here, stormwater flows through a series of basins, channels, waterfalls, and wetlands, providing both an aesthetic experience and effective water treatment.
The design also restores wildlife habitats using features such as woody debris structures, rock basking areas, and native plantings.
Future Developments
Future plans include adding a plaza and a floral clock. The park is known for its accessibility and inviting environment, making it a hub for relaxation, exercise, and eco-education.
