About the Location
Park Overview
Located next to the banks of the Clinton River in Sterling Heights, Gerald N. Donovan Park (formerly Jaycee Park) is a 5-acre green space situated amid suburban life. Named after the city's first mayor, Gerald N. Donovan (1968 - 1971), this modest but charming green space has a little something for everyone.
Trails and Nature
One of the park's highlights is its connection to the Clinton River Trail System, where you can lose yourself in the simple pleasure of a good walk. The pathways that wind along the riverbanks are particularly serene - excellent for clearing your mind after a long day or getting some gentle exercise in a natural setting.
The non-motorized trails keep things peaceful, and if you're a dog parent, you'll appreciate having a scenic spot to walk your four-legged friend. Just remember to clean up after your pup to keep the park enjoyable for everyone!
River Access
Perhaps the most special aspect of Donovan Park is the direct access to the Clinton River. Just a short detour from the main path leads you to shallow areas where kids can experience simple outdoor joys - catching toads, hunting for frogs, or collecting interesting rocks along the shore.
On warmer days, the sandy and rocky spots along the river offer a place to dip your toes and cool off. Just a heads-up though: don't let the river's calm appearance fool you. The current runs stronger than it looks, which can make kayaking upstream more of a workout than you might expect.
Recreation Facilities
Beyond its natural charm, the park offers well-kept athletic facilities. The baseball and softball fields come complete with lighting and bleachers, making them popular spots for local games that bring the community together.
For the little ones, there's a playground and swing set where they can burn off energy while you take a breather on one of the many benches scattered within the grounds.
Community Value
Donovan Park combines recreational amenities with natural features, offering families a convenient option for outdoor activities close to home.
