About the Location
A Neighborhood Retreat with History
Tucked away in southwest Minneapolis, Armatage Park spans a generous 17.21 acres in the heart of the Armatage neighborhood. Found at 2500 W 57th Street, this community space has been bringing neighbors together since 1948, when the city purchased the land for what now seems like an unbelievable $7,500.
The park actually began as a clever partnership between the park board and school board. They joined forces to create a space that would serve double duty - a playground for Armatage Elementary School by day and a community park with access to the school gym during off-hours. Talk about efficient use of resources!
What You'll Find There
Armatage offers that perfect mix of active recreation and relaxed green space. The baseball diamonds and regional athletic fields have been staples since the original development in 1954. These fields have gotten some love over the decades - rebuilds in 1979 and irrigation upgrades in 2010-2011 keep them in great shape. One of the nicest things about Armatage is how it manages to host community gatherings without ever feeling like you're packed in like sardines.
If you're with kids during summer, the wading pool offers a nice spot where little ones can cool off and splash around. When winter blankets Minneapolis, the park transforms with a beautifully maintained ice rink that draws skaters from around the neighborhood.
The Heart of Community Activity
The Recreation Center, which replaced the original shelter in 1977, acts as Armatage's social hub. The staff is generally friendly when you stop by. It's become a go-to spot for children's birthday celebrations and neighborhood gatherings, but on busier days, you might wish for more bathroom facilities.
A Touch of Artistic Flair
In 2000, the park received a distinctive 18-foot bronze sculpture called "Garden Party" created by artist Scott Wallace. This eye-catching piece, which stands as the Armatage Neighborhood Gateway, was funded through the Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP).
Take a closer look and you'll spot some whimsical elements - a seahorse, birds, and what the artist charmingly describes as "a great big lollipop."
Always Evolving
Armatage hasn't stood still over the years. The park expanded in 1997 with a new parking lot and a gym connected to both the school and recreation center. 2004 brought improvements to the playing fields and tennis courts, plus the addition of a skate park that's become a favorite with local teens.
Most recently in 2021, the park unveiled a thoughtfully designed playground that includes universally accessible elevated play components and an accessible seesaw. This clean, well-maintained play area has quickly become a neighborhood favorite, ensuring children of all abilities can join in the fun.
Beyond a Park
For many locals, Armatage has become part of family traditions. Parents who once played Little League or learned to skate here now bring their own children to enjoy similar experiences. The park hosts youth sports programs including baseball, football, and basketball that serve the neighborhood children.
