About Lyndale Farmstead Park in Minneapolis
Lyndale Farmstead Park is a 61-acre public park located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Situated on a scenic hillside at 39th and Bryant Avenue South, it is one of the most historically significant park sites in the city. The park was once the site of William S. King's "Lyndale Farm," from which it derives its name. King's farm originally encompassed almost all of Lake Harriet, spanning approximately 1,400 acres.
The park's history is closely tied to the development of Minneapolis's park system. In the early 1900s, Theodore Wirth, a prominent figure in Minneapolis park history, advocated for the park's expansion and improvement. Under his guidance, the park saw the addition of various facilities, including greenhouses, nurseries, and a warehouse.
Today, Lyndale Farmstead Park offers a range of recreational opportunities for visitors. The park features walking and biking paths, providing a peaceful retreat for nature enthusiasts. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy the park's football field, soccer field, softball field, and tennis courts. For families with children, the park includes playgrounds and tot lots.
In winter, the park transforms into a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board maintains an outdoor ice skating rink with a warming house, typically open from mid-December to mid-February, weather permitting.
The park is also home to the Theodore Wirth House and Administration Building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This historic structure, once the residence of Theodore Wirth and his family, stands as a testament to the park's rich history and its role in shaping Minneapolis's park system.
