A Riverside Haven

B.F. Nelson Park is part of something bigger - the Central Mississippi Riverfront Regional Park - and its 13.9 acres in Northeast Minneapolis are focused on preserving natural beauty while linking nearby recreational spots. It connects to Boom Island Park and sits close to Nicollet Island, right alongside the Mississippi River.

A Glimpse into the Past

This land has quite a history. This park sits on the former site of a paper mill owned by Benjamin Franklin Nelson, a significant Minneapolis civic leader from the late 19th century. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board acquired this land in 1987, and over time, they've added thoughtful touches like a river overlook and a fishing dock.

The care for this space goes beyond just maintaining it. Native grasses and shrubs have been planted along the shoreline to fight erosion and create a healthier ecosystem. What You'll Find Here

Getting around is easy with paved trails that accommodate everyone. There's free parking (though limited to 2 hours), and scattered across the park are public art pieces that add an unexpected cultural dimension to your visit. Plenty of open spaces invite impromptu picnics, and several communal picnic areas are available if you're planning something more organized.

The park transforms with the seasons - autumn brings a canvas of warm colors, while winter wraps the paths in a peaceful blanket of snow. Just a heads up: while you can enjoy the park year-round, the restrooms close during winter months.

The extensive walking trails connect to the larger riverfront trail system, making this spot ideal whether you're hiking, walking your dog, or getting in your daily run. On hot days, the abundant shade from mature trees creates perfect cool spots to relax with a book or just daydream.

The open grassy areas are good for frisbee games, catch, or simply sprawling out on a blanket. And if you work or live near downtown Minneapolis, this natural space is just minutes away.

Beyond the Park

B.F. Nelson seamlessly flows into Boom Island Park, creating one extended riverfront experience. While parking is free at B.F. Nelson, just note that if you venture over to Boom Island, you'll need to feed the meters.

Its location near St. Anthony Main makes it an excellent starting point for exploring northeast riverfront attractions. Photography enthusiasts often gravitate to the nearby bridge, which frames some pretty spectacular shots of the river and skyline.
