About Boom Island Park

River Vibes & City Views

Nestled along the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, Boom Island Park stretches across 22.5 acres of urban greenspace. This riverside park offers beautiful views of the river and downtown Minneapolis skyline - sunset is particularly stunning if you're looking to take photos.

Interestingly, this wasn't always a peninsula. Back in Minneapolis's lumber heyday, Boom Island was actually an island used for sorting logs. Today, it's transformed into a peaceful retreat from city life while remaining part of the larger Central Mississippi Riverfront Regional Park.

A Touch of History

The charming Boom Island Lighthouse stands as a nod to the park's past, but it's now located on nearby Hall's Island. While you can't go inside the small lighthouse, it adds a picturesque historical element to the landscape.

Planning an event? Make a reservation at this park

As you wander through, you'll notice interpretive signs that tell the story of this place - connecting you to Minneapolis's industrial roots and cultural heritage. Several historic bridges from the 19th century span the Mississippi here, adding extra character and a sense of stepping back in time.

Trails That Take You Places

The park features smooth, well-kept paved trails ideal for walking and biking, connecting seamlessly to other nearby parks and the Mississippi River Regional Corridor Trail. These paths are perfect whether you're up for a casual stroll or want to cycle your way through the riverfront.

Boom Island makes an excellent launching point for riverfront exploration. Many locals love crossing the pedestrian bridge to Nicollet Island, creating a longer route with changing scenery and eventually making their way to the impressive St. Anthony Falls.

Something for Everyone

If you're visiting with kids, you can find a nice playground to keep them entertained. For gatherings, the picnic shelters come equipped with grills and central fireplaces - excellent for cookouts. Some shelters even offer power outlets and can be reserved for special events. The expansive grassy areas invite impromptu games of frisbee, kite flying, or simply lounging on a blanket with a good book.

Own a local business? Promote it right here

Water enthusiasts will appreciate the boat dock and launch area, and if you don't have your own vessel, check out the Mississippi River Paddle Share station where you can rent kayaks for a river adventure. If fishing is more your style, you'll come across spots along the riverbank to cast a line.

Nature Meets Skyline

One of the park's standout features is the skyline view of Minneapolis. They're particularly magical at dusk when the city lights begin to twinkle against the darkening sky. There's something special about this blend of natural river setting with urban architecture in the background.

Come spring, the park bursts with color as flowering trees bloom around the grounds. The open spaces stay green through summer, providing plenty of room to spread out and relax. Birdwatchers might want to bring binoculars - the riverside location attracts a variety of feathered visitors throughout the seasons.

A Place of Reflection

The park is home to the nation's first permanent memorial dedicated to survivors of sexual violence, offering a thoughtful space featuring mosaic artwork and intentional landscaping.
