About the Location
History and Location
Tucked just south of downtown Minneapolis in the Ventura Village neighborhood, Peavey Field Park spreads across 7.08 acres of green urban refuge. This space offers family-friendly amenities and recreational facilities while maintaining its neighborhood character.
Dating back to 1927, the park came to life thanks to land donated by the family of Frank H. Peavey. Today, it serves the community with a touch of history and some notable recent updates. One of the park's simple pleasures? The stunning view of the Minneapolis skyline that creates an excellent backdrop for afternoon outings.
Recent Makeover
Between 2017 and 2019, Peavey Field got a serious facelift as part of Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board's 20-Year Neighborhood Park Plan. The renovations brought in a central walking promenade, new picnic pavilions, and play areas with cushioned surfacing that's much kinder on little knees.
The modern equipment and rubber ground surfacing improve safety, especially for families with young children. These updates have made the space more accessible and welcoming.
Sports and Recreation
Ball enthusiasts, you're in luck - the park boasts three full-size, lighted basketball courts complete with bench seating for when you need to catch your breath or cheer on friends. The courts are well-maintained and tend to draw a friendly crowd of players of all skill levels.
If basketball isn't your thing, the spacious open fields offer plenty of room for soccer matches, ultimate frisbee games, or just tossing a ball around. There's also a wading pool that opens during warmer months - its schedule often aligns with nearby Hope Academy's calendar, so plan accordingly if you're hoping for a splash.
Playground and Water Features
The state-of-the-art playground is definitely a highlight here. With equipment designed for various ages, including a dedicated tot lot for the little ones, it's easy to spend hours watching kids climb, slide, and explore. The playground's rubber surface means fewer scraped knees and worried parents.
Summer days get even better with the splash pad and wading pool, where kids can cool off while parents relax nearby. These water features make Peavey Field a natural gathering spot when temperatures rise.
Picnic and Gathering Areas
Need a spot for your family reunion or birthday celebration? The covered pavilions with tables make outdoor gatherings so much easier, rain or shine. While you won't find permanent grills installed, you're welcome to bring portable ones for your cookout.
These pavilions have become community hubs where local organizations sometimes host events, serving food and organizing activities for neighbors. The park's layout allows multiple groups to enjoy their own space without feeling crowded.
Art and Landscape
As you wander through Peavey Field, you'll come across public art installations and sculptures that add character to the grounds. These artistic elements can look different with changing seasons and perspectives.
The landscaping provides a green space within the urban surroundings. Walking paths connect the different areas of the park, offering pleasant routes for your morning jog or evening stroll.
Amenities
Peavey Field includes walking paths, playground equipment, and open spaces for various activities. Dog owners will appreciate that the park is dog-friendly (keep those leashes handy), and it's easily accessible via public transportation if you're not driving.
One thing to note - permanent restroom facilities are limited. During busy seasons, you might find portable toilets available. The park's recreation center provides indoor amenities including a kitchenette, gymnasium, and multipurpose rooms, making this a year-round destination regardless of Minnesota's sometimes challenging weather.
Visiting Information
You can enjoy Peavey Field daily from 6AM to 10PM, giving you plenty of time to fit in a visit. While the park is delightful during daylight hours, it's wise to exercise some caution if you're planning an evening visit after dark.
The central location makes getting here a breeze, although parking can be tight during popular times or special events. If you're exploring Minneapolis, the park's proximity to downtown makes it an easy and worthwhile addition to your itinerary.
