Whittier Park

Location and Setting

Whittier Park has become something of a community living room for locals in Minneapolis's Whittier neighborhood. Sitting right next to Whittier International Elementary School, it's naturally evolved into a gathering spot for families and neighborhood residents. What's easy to appreciate about this park is its surprisingly tranquil atmosphere - a peaceful little oasis amid the urban landscape that makes it well-suited for when you need a moment to breathe.

Outdoor Amenities

The park offers a nice mix of features that cater to pretty much everyone. At its core is a well-kept playground with multiple sections designed for different age groups. Parents of toddlers will appreciate the dedicated tot lot where the little ones can play safely while the bigger kids tackle the more challenging equipment. All the playground structures are regularly maintained, so you don't have to worry about splinters or wobbly parts.

During summer months, the wading pool opens up, synchronized with the school schedule - a simple but effective way for kids to cool off when the Minnesota humidity kicks in.

For the more active visitors, there's a half-court basketball area that usually has a friendly game or two happening, plus a softball field open for casual use. The large open field is great for impromptu frisbee games, picnics, or just stretching out with a good book. The picnic areas come equipped with tables and a drinking fountain, making it easy to spend a few hours here. On those particularly sunny Minnesota days, you'll find some shaded spots that provide welcome relief.

Recreation Center

Step inside the Whittier Recreation Center and you'll discover a versatile indoor space that serves many purposes. There's a gymnasium, craft room, community kitchen, and a computer lab for public use.

What makes this center special is the Spark'd Studio, offering young people creative outlets in photography, music production, and graphic design. If you're planning a community meeting or event, there are also multipurpose rooms available to reserve.
