About the Location
A Bit of History
Situated in Minneapolis's Wenonah neighborhood, Bossen Field Park spans a generous 36.5 acres of community space. The park found its home here in 1947, named after Christian A. Bossen, the parks superintendent who served from 1935 to 1945.
What started as a modest ten-acre vision grew into something much more substantial to accommodate multiple playing fields. By 1959, the park had its first shelter building, establishing its place in the neighborhood.
Growing with the Community
Like any good community space, Bossen Field Park has evolved over time. The park underwent a major transformation between 2016 and 2019, thanks to funding from the 20-Year Neighborhood Park Plan. This renovation breathed new life into the space with a modern playground, basketball court, expanded parking, and improved pathways.
The softball fields got special attention - they were realigned, renovated, and fitted with new lights for evening games. Even the park building and restrooms received a much-needed update during this period.
Softball Heaven
If you're a softball enthusiast, you've probably already heard about this place. Bossen Field Park boasts an impressive softball complex with seven well-maintained fields. Several are illuminated for evening play, making this park a go-to destination for leagues and tournaments.
The fields are well-maintained, with professional groundskeeping throughout the season. Many players regard this as one of the better softball complexes in the area.
Beyond softball, you'll come across open grassy areas occasionally hosting other activities like grass volleyball. If you're part of an organized league or just looking for a casual game, there's space for you here.
Kid-Friendly Fun
The playground at Bossen Field Park is popular with families. It's designed to be inclusive for children of all ages and abilities. Older kids particularly enjoy the unique hexagon-tiled dome structure and various climbing challenges that keep them engaged.
Younger visitors haven't been forgotten - there's a dedicated area with age-appropriate equipment just for them. During the summer months (Memorial Day to Labor Day), a wading pool offers an excellent splash zone for cooling off on hot Minnesota days.
While you'll find some shaded spots along the playground's edges, much of the park is open to the sun - so don't forget your sunscreen. The thoughtful layout allows parents to watch their children play while keeping an eye on softball games nearby.
Beyond the Bases
There's more to Bossen Field Park than just sports fields. You'll discover picnic areas complete with grills and benches scattered within the grounds - great for a family cookout or casual lunch. For something different, head to the wooded hill area to try your hand at the horseshoe pits.
The park features accessible pathways and plenty of free parking, including handicap spaces. Dog walkers frequently enjoy the grounds (though you'll need to keep your four-legged friends off the athletic fields).
One unexpected feature? The park's proximity to the airport means you can watch planes descend, sometimes even seeing details like landing gear deployment as aircraft approach.
Practical Matters
You can visit the park daily from 6AM to midnight, giving you plenty of time to enjoy all it has to offer. Permanent restrooms are located near the wading pool, primarily open during summer months.
Year-round portable toilets are available around the park, especially near the athletic fields. You'll also find drinking fountains and garbage cans conveniently placed around the grounds.
Accessibility is a priority here - pathways accommodate strollers and wheelchairs with ease. The recent renovations have improved the park's facilities and accessibility.
