About Van Cleve Park in Minneapolis
Van Cleve Park is a community park located in southeast Minneapolis, Minnesota, near the University of Minnesota. Established in 1890, it was originally known as the 2nd Ward Park before being renamed in 1895 to honor Civil War General Horatio Van Cleve.
The park spans approximately 7 acres and features a variety of recreational facilities and green spaces. It has undergone several improvements over the years, including the installation of new playground equipment in 2022, which is more ADA compliant and includes improved lighting along the park's southwest path.
Van Cleve Park is known for its family-friendly amenities, including a colorful playground and tot lot. The park also features a wading pool with zero-depth entry, which opens on Memorial Day weekend and closes on Labor Day. The pool operates daily from 10 am to 9 pm, though it is unguarded.
In addition to its recreational facilities, the park offers space for picnicking and public art. During winter months, Van Cleve Park provides ice-skating, hockey, and broomball rinks for community enjoyment.
The park includes a recreation center with various community gathering spaces, such as a community kitchen, computer lab, craft room, gymnasium, and meeting rooms. These facilities host a range of programs, activities, and events throughout the year.
