About the Location
A Park With History
Nestled in the Near North area of Minneapolis, Bethune Park is one of those nearby parks that feels like an extension of home. What makes this place special isn't just its green spaces or play areas - it's the rich history behind it. Originally known as Grant Park (yes, after President Ulysses S. Grant), in 1972 it was renamed to honor Mary McLeod Bethune, an incredible educator and civil rights activist who deserves far more recognition than she typically gets.
You'll come across the park right next to Bethune Community School and the Phyllis Wheatley Community Center, creating this perfect little community triangle. Throughout the year, the park hosts various celebrations - the Juneteenth events, in particular, are well-attended neighborhood gatherings.
Places to Play
The playground and wading pool got a much-needed facelift in 2016, and it was worth the wait. The wading pool features a zero-depth entrance and splash-pad-like bubblers that are popular with children. Thanks to community support, there are comfortable new benches surrounding the pool area where parents can actually relax while keeping an eye on the little ones.
During summer, the pool is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Just note that there's no lifeguard on duty, so you'll need to keep watch over your swimmers. The playground itself is thoughtfully designed for kids of all ages, with plenty of swings, slides, and obstacle features that challenge them without being overwhelming.
The big tire swing is a notable feature and often a favorite for children visiting the park. There's something timelessly fun about it that perfectly complements the more traditional playground equipment, creating this perfect space for neighborhood kids to burn energy and make friends.
Beyond the Basics
For sports enthusiasts, there's a full-sized basketball court available. For families with really young children, the tot lot provides a safer, scaled-down play area that's just right for the little adventurers.
The picnic area offers spacious tables and benches suitable for family gatherings. And yes, there are restrooms and drinking fountains available - those practical necessities that can make or break a day at the park.
The park also includes a community garden, reflecting the collaborative nature of the neighborhood.
Part of the Neighborhood
Bethune Park is an integral part of the Near North neighborhood. It continues to evolve with ongoing improvements, offering both recreational space and a cultural landmark.
The beautiful, quiet atmosphere creates a peaceful retreat from city life, while still remaining clean and safe. For those who prefer wheels to feet, there are dedicated lanes for biking, scooters, and skateboards - just another way this park tries to welcome everyone, regardless of how they like to enjoy the outdoors.
