Cavell Park

Historical Background

Cavell Park is a community park located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Spanning 3.63 acres, this neighborhood park is situated in the Waite Park area of Northeast Minneapolis, within the Northeast Service Area and Commissioner District 1.

The park was named after Edith Cavell, an English nurse who worked in Belgium during World War I. Cavell gained recognition for helping Allied soldiers escape to the Netherlands during the German occupation of Belgium. She was executed by Germany in 1915 for her efforts, subsequently becoming a symbol used to generate support for the war against Germany in Allied countries.

Park Development

Cavell Park's history dates back to 1968 when the Minneapolis Park Board acquired the site from the school board. The location was previously home to the Edith Cavell School.

In 1977, the site was redeveloped as a park, featuring ball fields, playground equipment, and a recreation shelter. Further improvements were made in 1999, including the installation of new courts and paths, as well as additional landscaping.

The park offers a variety of recreational facilities for visitors of all ages. It provides a space for both active sports and leisurely activities, making it a versatile destination for local residents.

Community Investment

Cavell Park is part of the 20-Year Neighborhood Park Plan (NPP20), which has increased maintenance efforts and funding for ongoing rehabilitation and major projects. This initiative aims to restore neighborhood parks and address racial and economic equity issues within the Minneapolis park system.
