About the Location

Historic Origins

Established in 1883 and originally named Central Park, this 33.94-acre urban oasis was later renamed to honor Charles Loring, the first president of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and a key figure in the city's park system development.

The park holds several historical milestones, being the first Minneapolis park to install electric lights, a wading pool, and senior programs. Its well-preserved Spanish Colonial Revival shelter reflects a legacy of innovation and inclusivity in recreational design.

Natural Features

The centerpiece of the park is Loring Pond, a scenic small lake surrounded by walking and biking paths. Visitors can cross the pond via an iron bridge, originally built in 1885 and replaced in 2006.

The Garden of the Seasons showcases local flora and themed landscaping, emphasizing the park's commitment to biodiversity and community engagement. The lush landscapes and winding pathways create a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city.

Art and Culture

For art enthusiasts, the park features the Berger Fountain, also called the "Dandelion Fountain," which is currently being restored with renovation completion scheduled by 2025. A statue of Norwegian composer Ole Bull also graces the grounds.

The park provides a direct link to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden via the Irene Hixon Whitney Bridge, adding to its cultural significance. The historical bandstand continues to be a venue for public performances, movies, and concerts.

Recreation and Events

Loring Park caters to a wide range of recreational activities, featuring amenities like a playground, basketball and tennis courts, a wading pool, picnic areas, shuffleboard courts, and a fishing pier.

The park hosts several annual festivals, including the Twin Cities Pride Festival and the Loring Park Art Festival, making it a hub for social gatherings. Its central location connects downtown Minneapolis with surrounding neighborhoods, making it accessible and popular among locals and visitors alike.
