About the Location
From Coal Storage to Community Space
Tucked away in Minneapolis, Minnesota is a 13-acre triangular retreat known as Xcel Energy Park. Situated east of Marshall Street NE and south of St. Anthony Parkway, this green space has quite the transformation story. Once upon a time, this was simply NSP Fields - a rather unglamorous coal storage area serving the nearby Riverside power plant.
In 2013, Xcel Energy rolled up their sleeves for a much-needed soil remediation project to clean up the industrial remnants. By 2014, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) had signed a 20-year lease with Xcel Energy, officially bringing this revitalized space into the city's recreational portfolio.
What You'll Find There
A main feature of Xcel Field Park is the Rod Carew All Star Field. This synthetic turf field opened in 2014 and was created through collaborative community support. The field came to life thanks to contributions from an impressive roster of supporters including the Cal Ripken Senior Foundation, Minnesota Twins, Major League Baseball, Pohlad Foundation, Xcel Energy, and a Hennepin Youth Sports grant.
Beyond baseball, you'll come across winding walking trails that meander through the grounds - well-suited for a morning stroll or an evening walk to clear your head. The park also offers generous open grassy areas where you can toss a frisbee, practice your golf swing, or simply sprawl out with a good book.
Getting Outdoors
Xcel Field Park offers good versatility. You'll discover picnic areas nestled under shade trees where you can enjoy lunch while watching the world go by. The open layout works well for dog owners - you'll find enough space for dogs to run around and play.
If you're looking for a structured activity or just some time in nature, the combination of fields and paths offers something for everyone.
Looking Ahead
Xcel Field Park provides locals with space to play, exercise, and spend time outdoors. Looking to the future, the park's master plan includes ambitious additions - three more ball fields and a small concessions building.
On March 19, 2015, the park will officially become Xcel Energy Park following a vote by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board of Commissioners. The name change acknowledges the ongoing partnership with the energy company that owns this land that has evolved from industrial use to a vibrant community space.
