About Xcel Field Park in Minneapolis
Xcel Field Park is a 13-acre triangular parcel of land located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The park is situated east of Marshall Street NE and south of St. Anthony Parkway. Formerly known as NSP Fields, the site once served as a coal storage area for the nearby Riverside power plant before being transformed into a recreational space.
In 2014, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) signed a 20-year lease with Xcel Energy to operate the park. This agreement came after Xcel Energy completed a soil remediation project in 2013 to address contamination issues from its previous industrial use.
The park's centerpiece is Rod Carew All Star Field, a synthetic turf ball field that opened in 2014. This state-of-the-art facility was made possible through significant contributions from various organizations, including the Cal Ripken Senior Foundation, Minnesota Twins, Major League Baseball, Pohlad Foundation, Xcel Energy, and a Hennepin Youth Sports grant.
Xcel Field Park serves as a valuable community asset, providing recreational opportunities for local residents and sports enthusiasts. The park's master plan envisions the addition of three more ball fields supported by a small concessions building.
On March 19, 2025, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board of Commissioners voted to officially rename the park to Xcel Energy Park, reflecting the ongoing partnership with the energy company that owns the land.
