The park's history dates back to 1927 when it was established through a cooperative effort between the school board and park board. Originally known as Alexander Ramsey Playground, it was officially named Keewaydin Park on May 2, 1928. The name "Keewaydin" comes from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem "The Song of Hiawatha," where it refers to the "Northwest Wind, the Home Wind."
Keewaydin Park has undergone several improvements over the years. In 2023, the park received a major overhaul of its playground area. The new playground features the Minneapolis park system's first bouldering structure for climbing, as well as adventure play equipment, a zipline, and nature play elements. In winter, the park has been noted for its well-equipped shelter for skating and hockey rinks, thanks to the facilities provided by the adjacent school building. The park also features walking paths, allowing for pleasant strolls and exercise opportunities in all seasons.
For those looking to relax or have a picnic, the park offers picnic areas with tables. The grounds include grassy areas suitable for laying out a blanket and enjoying a snack or meal outdoors. Conveniently, drinking fountains and restroom facilities are available on-site.
The Keewaydin Recreation Center, located within the park, offers additional amenities and programs. It provides indoor spaces including a multipurpose room and a meeting room, expanding the park's functionality for community gatherings and events.
