About the Location
A Walk Through Time
Situated in the Lowry Hill neighborhood of Minneapolis, Parade Park spans 45.77 acres of green space with a story that goes back generations. The Minneapolis Park Board gradually acquired this land between 1903 and 1935, preserving what was once part of the ancient Mississippi River's path. Thanks to this geological history, the soil here is wonderfully peaty - a gardener's dream in earlier times.
From Soldiers to Soccer Fields
Ever wonder how Parade Park got its name? The answer lies in its military beginnings. This space was once used for military drills and exercises, earning it the fitting nickname "The Parade." Situated in the heart of Minneapolis, the park has naturally found itself at the center of many city conversations and development plans over the decades.
Sports Central
By the 1910s, Parade Park had transformed into Minneapolis's amateur sports hub. In 1914, you would have found an impressive seven baseball fields and two football fields here - making it the place to be for local athletes.
Fast forward to today, and the sporting tradition continues strong. The park maintains several baseball diamonds and features a premium turf soccer field where weekend warriors gather regularly to play. Throughout its history, the park has also housed tennis courts, the beautiful Armory Garden, and even a public bathhouse that dates back to 1901.
Changing with the Times
1951 marked a significant milestone with the construction of Parade Stadium, the city's first public football venue that could seat an impressive 16,560 spectators.
The stadium stood until 1990, when it was removed to allow for the expansion of the neighboring Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. Now, you can take in various art installations while wandering through the park's grounds - an excellent blend of recreation and culture.
Today, Parade Park serves the community with recreational spaces for serious athletes and families alike.
What You'll Find Here
Scattered within the grounds are several pavilions that provide welcome shade on sunny Minnesota days. You'll also find plenty of seating areas where you can relax and take in the scenery.
When nature calls, you won't have to cut your visit short - permanent restroom facilities are housed in the distinctive large silver cube building, while portable toilets are conveniently located near the baseball diamonds. The parking lot next to the baseball area offers plenty of spaces, however it tends to fill up during busy times and special events.
