About Chute Square in Minneapolis

Chute Square is a small urban park located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Covering approximately one acre, this historic green space is situated on University Avenue in the Nicollet Island-East Bank neighborhood. The park was established in 1903 when the city of Minneapolis acquired the land, and it was named in honor of Richard Chute, an early University of Minnesota regent and prominent businessman.

The square is perhaps best known for housing the Ard Godfrey House, which is the oldest surviving wood frame home in the Twin Cities area. Built in 1848, this Greek Revival style house was originally located elsewhere but was moved to Chute Square in 1907. The house, now a museum operated by the Woman's Club of Minneapolis, offers visitors a glimpse into 19th-century life in the region.

Chute Square provides a peaceful retreat within the urban environment, featuring green spaces and mature trees that offer shade and natural beauty. The park serves as a gathering place for local residents and visitors, providing a space for relaxation and small community events. Its location near the University of Minnesota campus and the Mississippi River adds to its accessibility and appeal.

While compact in size, Chute Square plays an important role in preserving local history and offering a tranquil outdoor space in the heart of Minneapolis. The park's blend of historical significance and natural elements makes it a unique asset to the neighborhood and the city's park system.
