About the Location
Rich History
First established in the early 1900s, this 25-acre neighborhood park spans nine city blocks and remains a pivotal recreational hub for the local community. North Commons Park is notable for being the first in Minneapolis to host a gym and swimming pool, underscoring its legacy of prioritizing recreational opportunities for residents.
Outdoor Amenities
The park features a variety of outdoor spaces for sports, leisure, and community gatherings. Its extensive offerings include multiple sports fields and courts for baseball, football, tennis, soccer, and more.
Families flock to its playground, tot lot, and picnic areas, while the wading pool and renowned water park provide relief during summer months. The water park, which includes water slides, a splash zone, and "funbrellas," is particularly popular, with free admission for children under 18.
Indoor Facilities
Indoors, the North Commons Recreation Center houses a gymnasium, craft and multipurpose rooms, a kitchen, and public technology resources. The center also hosts various programs, from fitness and arts to youth development activities.
Future Developments
Recent and planned upgrades are transforming the park into an even more vibrant community hub. Major renovations to the water park, fields, playground, and recreation center are in progress as part of a $35 million project, the largest-ever investment by the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board.
These improvements aim to create spaces for creativity, culture, and inclusive recreation. Today, North Commons Park remains a welcoming green space and a community centerpiece, offering extensive facilities and activities that cater to all ages and interests.
