About the Location
A Park With History
Situated in the Minneapolis landscape since the early 1900s, North Commons Park stretches across 25 acres and nine city blocks, representing the neighborhood's go-to spot for recreation and community connection. It has some historical significance too - this was the first park in Minneapolis to feature both a gym and swimming pool, establishing a tradition of accessible recreation that continues today.
The Great Outdoors
If you're into sports, you'll come across your happy place here. The park is dotted with fields and courts for just about everything - baseball, football, tennis, soccer, you name it.
For families, the playground and tot lot offer an ideal backdrop for an afternoon of fun, while the picnic areas are ideal for a casual lunch under the trees. When summer heat hits, the wading pool and especially the treasured water park become nearby retreats. The water park is a particular location with its water slides, splash zone, and quirky "funbrellas" - and it won't break the bank either. Kids under 18 get in free, while adults pay just $5.
Step Inside
The North Commons Recreation Center isn't just a building - it's the indoor heart of the park. Inside you'll find a gymnasium, craft and multipurpose rooms, a kitchen, and public tech resources. It's where fitness classes meet art programs and youth development activities take shape.
Where Community Happens
This isn't just a park - it's where the neighborhood comes together. Youth sports programs run during the year, and the basketball courts buzz with energy most days. The shaded areas and working water fountains throughout make hanging out here comfortable, even on warmer days.
If you're looking for a more relaxed vibe, weekends during nice weather offer a quieter park experience. You might catch a home game of the Polars baseball team - just one of the ways the park weaves itself into the fabric of local life.
Looking Forward
Exciting changes are underway at North Commons. A massive $35 million project - the largest investment ever made by the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board - is bringing major upgrades to the water park, fields, playground, and recreation center.
The playground renovation should be wrapping up soon, creating an even better space for the park's youngest visitors. These improvements aren't just about updating facilities - they're about creating spaces that foster creativity, honor culture, and welcome everyone.
Today, North Commons provides a green space in the city with facilities and activities for all ages.
