About Jackson Square Park in Minneapolis
Jackson Square Park is a charming 6.9-acre neighborhood park located in the Holland area of northeast Minneapolis, Minnesota. This historic park, established in 1906, is named after the nearby Jackson Street, itself named in honor of President Andrew Jackson. Its proximity to Edison High School and integration into the surrounding community make it a vital recreational and cultural hub.
The park features significant public art pieces, such as the interactive “In Flux” sculpture by artist James Brenner, which includes benches encircling the artwork and poetic text from community discussions embedded in cast-iron plates. Public art brings a unique artistic identity to the park, reflective of northeast Minneapolis's vibrant Arts District.
For families and children, Jackson Square Park offers a recently updated musical playground equipped with seven innovative percussion instruments designed to inspire creativity. The park also supplies open green spaces for general recreation and climbing trees for added adventure. Its playground is thoughtfully designed, with equipment suitable for young children and older kids in close proximity, allowing parents to supervise multiple age groups comfortably.
The park includes a splash-pad style wading pool, open from Memorial Day through Labor Day (10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.), with features such as zero-entry sides and splash pad water jets. The wading pool is perfect for young children and is a popular summer attraction. In the winter, the park offers sledding opportunities on a hill located behind Edison High School.
Athletics and fitness enthusiasts can enjoy facilities such as a basketball court, a sand volleyball court, and a softball field. Picnic areas with tables and a Little Free Library support leisurely activities, while amenities like restrooms and a drinking fountain provide added convenience. The park’s restrooms are seasonal, aligning with its busiest times of the year.
A neighborhood gathering space with historical significance, Jackson Square Park also fosters community well-being through its participation in free summer lunch programs for children. Its location near local dining establishments makes it part of a lively urban environment.
