About Sumner Field Park in Minneapolis
Sumner Field Park is a 4.77-acre neighborhood park located in the Sumner-Glenwood area of North Minneapolis, Minnesota. The park was established in 1911 and named after Charles Sumner, a United States Senator from Massachusetts who was an ardent opponent of slavery.
The park has undergone several changes throughout its history. In its early years, the park board gradually added amenities like tennis courts, playground equipment, and fencing. By 1915, it was noted as one of the busiest fields in the Minneapolis park system. The park has been closely tied to the surrounding community, serving as an important green space for residents of nearby housing developments over the decades.
Today, Sumner Field Park features tree-lined walking paths and ample green space. It includes a portion of Bassett Creek, with bridges and overlooks providing views of the waterway. The park serves as a central gathering place and recreational area for the neighborhood, offering a mix of natural elements and basic park amenities.
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board continues to maintain and improve Sumner Field Park as part of its commitment to providing quality park spaces throughout the city. The park benefits from the 20-Year Neighborhood Park Plan, which provides additional funding for maintenance and improvements to address community needs and promote equity.
