Historic Origins
Beard's Plaisance is a charming park located in the Linden Hills neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Situated along the shores of Lake Harriet, this park is part of the larger Minneapolis Chain of Lakes Regional Park system.
The park's history dates back to 1884 when Henry Beard, along with James Merritt and Charles Reeve, offered to donate their land on the shores of Lake Harriet for public use. The name "Plaisance" is derived from a French term meaning "pleasure ground," aptly describing the park's purpose.
Park Features
Beard's Plaisance covers a portion of the 126.2 acres of land owned by the park board around Lake Harriet. The park features a gently sloping landscape that leads down to the lakeshore, providing visitors with scenic views of Lake Harriet.
Over the years, the park has undergone several improvements. The first picnic shelter was built in 1904, and a stone walk was constructed along Upton Avenue west of the park. In more recent times, the playground was completely renovated in 2011-2012, ensuring modern play equipment for children.
