About The Commons in Minneapolis
The Commons, also referred to as Downtown East Commons or Commons Park, is a 4.2-acre urban park located in the heart of Downtown East, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Opened in July 2016, this park spans two city blocks and provides a welcoming green space amid the bustling urban core. The park is bordered by South 4th and 5th Streets and runs between 5th Avenue South and Park Avenue, with Portland Avenue bisecting its layout. It is conveniently situated adjacent to U.S. Bank Stadium, lending itself to vibrant community activities during events at the stadium.
Initially developed through a public-private partnership, which raised $15 million, The Commons was designed to replace former surface parking lots and revitalize the East Town district. It is now operated by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. The park offers two main lawns, walking paths, and extensive green spaces, which are accessible for both relaxation and recreation. It also features shared-use pathways like the Samatar Crossing and the Hiawatha LRT Trail, ensuring connectivity with the city's larger biking and pedestrian network.
The park is known for hosting a variety of community-centric events and programs, including outdoor concerts, fitness classes, story times, and seasonal movie nights. Visitors can also enjoy lawn games, arts and crafts activities, and engaging installations such as the Imagination Playground for children. During summer evenings, The Commons is home to the Mill City Farmers Market, where visitors can explore vendors, food trucks, live music, and yoga sessions. The park provides a tranquil retreat for residents and workers, encouraging both relaxation and active recreation year-round.
Notably, the park includes rotating food truck vendors, shaded seating areas, splash fountains, and spaces suitable for hosting private events like birthday parties and corporate picnics. It also showcases public art and other performances that cater to diverse audiences. With its vibrant design, attractive amenities, and integration into the urban fabric, The Commons has become an essential part of Minneapolis' social and recreational life.
