About Windom South Park in Minneapolis
Windom South Park is a small neighborhood park located in the Windom neighborhood of south Minneapolis, Minnesota. The park covers approximately one acre of land and is situated adjacent to Windom School at the corner of 58th Street and Wentworth Avenue.
Originally proposed in 1928, the park was not established until 1986 when the Minneapolis Park Board leased land from the school board to create a playground for small children. The initial playlot was constructed in 1988. In 1997, the park board collaborated with the school board to remodel the elementary school and add joint-use facilities including a gym, media center, and park recreation center. These shared facilities were completed in 1999.
The park features outdoor play areas for children, including a playground and tot lot that were upgraded in 2008 to include two accessible play areas. Indoor facilities are housed within the attached Windom South Recreation Center, which offers programming and amenities shared with the school.
Windom South Park provides a local green space and recreational amenities for residents of the surrounding neighborhood. Its joint-use model with the adjacent school allows for efficient use of public resources to serve both students and community members.
