About the Location
A Touch of History
Named after General John J. "Blackjack" Pershing, commander of American forces in World War I, this park has quite the transformation story. Back in 1922 when it was established, you wouldn't recognize the place - it was just a peat swamp overgrown with willow brush.
The park received its official dedication on Armistice Day, November 11, 1931, a fitting tribute to its military namesake.
What You'll Find
Pershing Field offers a nice blend of busy recreational spaces and quieter areas to unwind. The grounds are maintained year-round, with a layout that accommodates various activities.
The recreation center is the park's indoor hub, offering community programs throughout the year and - perhaps most importantly when you're out with the kids - clean, accessible restrooms.
Fun for Everyone
Little ones gravitate toward the playground, which comes with plenty of sand for digging adventures and creative play. Parents with toddlers will appreciate the separate play area designed specifically with the youngest visitors in mind.
When summer temperatures climb, the wading pool (measuring a kid-friendly 13-16 inches deep) and adjacent splash pad become the park's most popular destinations. It's enjoyable to see children cooling off in the sprays of water on a hot day.
For the Sports Enthusiasts
Looking to work on your backhand? The park's tennis courts are available, although they might show their age in spots. Basketball players fare better with the basketball courts, which are maintained in very good condition.
Team sports have their place too, with soccer fields and baseball fields that provide plenty of room to play, despite some uneven patches of grass here and there. The partial ring of shade trees around the fields offers welcome relief during sunny afternoon games.
Community Heart
More than just a collection of amenities, Pershing Field represents a neighborhood gathering spot where you'll discover everything from casual picnics to organized sports. During summer evenings, the park sometimes transforms into an outdoor cinema with movie nights under the stars.
Its location next to Southwest High School and the connected stadium makes it a natural extension of school life, with students often using the grounds for practices and activities. The open spaces provide room for family get-togethers or simply finding a peaceful moment in the midst of city life.
