It was named after William D. Washburn, a prominent Minneapolis businessman and politician who owned a mansion called Fair Oaks on this site in the late 19th century.
Park Development
The park's history dates back to 1911 when Washburn sold the land to the Minneapolis Park Board. After Washburn's death in 1912, his mansion remained on the property until 1924 when it was demolished due to maintenance costs.
The area was then transformed into a public park, preserving the natural beauty of the former estate.
