About the Location
A Historic Haven in the Heart of the City
Located in one of Minneapolis's most densely populated neighborhoods, Stevens Square Park feels like a breath of fresh air amid the urban landscape. This cozy 2.51-acre green space might be small, but it packs a lot of character into its modest footprint.
Walk through the park and you'll discover yourself surrounded by historic architecture while enjoying a peaceful retreat from city life. Established back in 1907, the park was named after Colonel John H. Stevens, a key figure who helped shape Minneapolis in its early days.
What You'll Find Here
Despite its compact size, there's plenty to do in this neighborhood haven. Basketball enthusiasts can shoot some hoops at the half-court basketball court, while kids can burn off energy at the colorful modern playground that reflects the creative spirit of the area.
A walking path cuts through the middle of the park, fantastic for when you need to stretch your legs or clear your head. Feeling hungry? Grab a spot at one of the several picnic benches scattered within the grounds or fire up one of the two grills for an impromptu cookout.
The open fields offer just enough space to toss a frisbee, have a picnic, or simply lie back and watch the clouds drift by. During the summer months, the park comes alive with the Red Hot Art Festival, a local favorite that showcases neighborhood artists and their work.
The Views Are Worth It
One thing that makes this park special is its elevated terrain. The large hill not only adds character but gives you a different perspective of your surroundings. In winter, you'll often find neighborhood kids taking advantage of the slope for some impromptu sledding.
Perhaps the most Instagram-worthy feature is the park's view of the Minneapolis skyline. It's quite something to sit on a bench, coffee in hand, and take in that urban panorama. This little city-block sized park is primarily used by locals rather than tourists, which gives it an authentic community feel.
Looking Forward While Honoring the Past
The park has evolved over the years, transforming former tennis and softball courts into the spaces you see today. Major renovations in the 1990s reshaped much of the park, with the most recent upgrade coming in 2015 when new playground equipment was installed that beautifully captures the neighborhood's artistic flair.
Not everything runs perfectly smoothly - the new drinking fountain project has faced some delays, but that's just part of the ongoing story of a park that continues to grow with its community.
There are plans to potentially expand the basketball court and add a picnic shelter in the future.
Finding Your Way
Getting to Stevens Square Park is a breeze with multiple transit options available, and it's just a short walk from downtown Minneapolis. The surrounding area features historic sites, community gardens, and scenic spots that connect well with the park.
