About the Location
A Lake Reborn
What happens when an old gravel quarry gets a second chance at life? You get the 18-acre Foster-Arend Park, centered around a gorgeous lake that plunges to depths of 42 feet. This crystal-clear body of water isn't just pretty to look at - it's a playground for swimmers and anglers who come seeking the rainbow trout that call these waters home. Every two weeks, about 600 new trout are released into the lake, ensuring there's always something tugging at your fishing line, no matter the season.
During summer months, the lake transforms with an inflatable water park bobbing on the surface - think floating obstacle courses and bouncy platforms that kids (and let's be honest, adults too) can't seem to get enough of. It provides a fun summer activity that many visitors enjoy.
Sun, Sand, and Picnics
The sandy beach area is where summer days stretch into golden afternoons. Spread out your towel for some sun, or claim one of the picnic shelters nestled in the surrounding green spaces for a family lunch. The beach is particularly great for families with kids, however, keep an eye out for the depth changes - the lake floor drops off rather dramatically in places, so mind those safety signs.
You'll discover seasonal restrooms available when nature calls, shelters you can reserve for your next birthday bash, and a fishing pier that lets you cast a line without getting your feet wet. These pavilions make perfect backdrops for everything from family reunions to casual get-togethers.
Paths to Wander
A scenic 3/4-mile trail loops around the lake, offering peaceful views that change with the seasons. The mix of paved and natural paths winds through the park, inviting you to stretch your legs while keeping an eye out for the resident turtles that occasionally sun themselves nearby.
For the younger set, playgrounds with quality swings provide an ideal energy outlet, while those looking for a bit more action can hit up the sand volleyball courts or try their hand at the horseshoe pits. Open fields adjacent to these areas offer plenty of space for impromptu soccer games or a casual game of catch.
The Little Things That Matter
Within the park, you'll spot BBQ grills ready for your summer cookout ambitions. There's even a charming fish-shaped bike rack that adds a touch of whimsy to your visit. Changing rooms with lockers are available (just remember to bring your own lock), and water spigots let you rinse off the sand before heading home.
Dog owners, your four-legged friends are welcome in most areas of the park as long as they're leashed. While pups need to stay clear of the designated swimming zones, there's a separate spot where they can splash around to their heart's content.
Four Seasons of Fun
While summer might steal the spotlight, Foster-Arend Park doesn't close up shop when the temperatures drop. Winter brings its own brand of fun with ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing options when conditions cooperate. The park also hosts the annual Polar Plunge, where hundreds of brave (or perhaps slightly crazy) souls jump into the icy waters to raise money for Minnesota Special Olympics.
The park's transformation from industrial quarry to natural retreat is a remarkable part of its history. Unlike many deeper lakes in Minnesota that stay chilly, the waters here warm up nicely in summer, making it an especially inviting place to cool off when the humidity creeps up.
