About Ames Lake Park in Saint Paul
Ames Lake Park is a public recreational area located in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The park is centered around Ames Lake, a restored wetland that was once filled to make way for the Phalen Shopping Center in the 1950s. As part of a community revitalization plan, the area was transformed back into a natural wetland, demonstrating a remarkable journey from its original state to urban development and then back to nature.
The restoration project, designed by the Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District, included the realignment of Prosperity Avenue and the construction of wetland elements. This effort has created a serene environment within an urban setting, providing residents and visitors with a place to connect with nature.
Ames Lake Park offers a variety of outdoor experiences. Visitors can enjoy walking paths that wind around the lake, providing opportunities for exercise and nature observation. The park also features a scenic pier, allowing visitors to get closer to the water and potentially observe local wildlife.
The park is integrated into the larger green space network of Saint Paul, with easy access to the Bruce Vento Trail. This connection enhances the park's value as a recreational asset, allowing users to extend their outdoor activities beyond the immediate park boundaries.
Currently managed by St. Paul Parks and Recreation Environmental Services with support from the Watershed District, Ames Lake Park serves as an example of successful urban wetland restoration and community-driven environmental stewardship.
