About Kellogg Mall Park in Saint Paul
Kellogg Mall Park is a 4.2-acre urban green space located in downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota, along the Mississippi River. Originally built in 1931, the park stretches for four blocks along Kellogg Boulevard, offering visitors scenic views of the river, Harriet Island, and Raspberry Island.
The park's design features a promenade with paved walkways lined by tree allées and decorative railings along the bluff edge. Two low circular fountains serve as focal points, surrounded by grassy spaces and small tree groupings that provide shade and picnic opportunities.
Kellogg Mall Park has a rich history tied to Saint Paul's development. In the 1920s, the area underwent significant changes when buildings blocking the river view were demolished as part of the city's reconstruction efforts. This transformation allowed for the creation of the park and the renaming of Third Street to Kellogg Boulevard.
In the 1980s, the park underwent renovations in partnership with Public Art Saint Paul. Artist Cliff Garten contributed to the park's redesign, adding an arcing pergola near one of the reconstructed fountains and creating sculptures representing local industries and people. The park also features interpretive elements, including terra cotta reliefs of notable historic figures set into railing piers and granite pavers in the walkways that narrate the city's history.
Today, Kellogg Mall Park serves as a tranquil urban oasis, offering downtown workers and visitors a serene escape to enjoy nature, relax, and take in the views of the Mississippi River and Saint Paul's skyline.
