About the Location

A Hidden Valley in the City

Positioned in Saint Paul's Dayton's Bluff district lies Swede Hollow Park, a 25-acre pocket of nature that feels separated from the urban bustle. Sitting about 150 feet below the surrounding cityscape, this deep ravine creates a little pocket of wilderness that's perfect when you need a break from concrete and car horns. There's something quite striking about descending into this secluded green space and watching the city disappear above you.

Rich Immigrant History

Long before it became a park, this land was home to Dakota people. Then in the 1860s, Swedish immigrants moved in, naming it "Svenska Dalen" or Swede Hollow. What's fascinating is how this little valley became a first home in America for wave after wave of newcomers - Italians, Irish, Poles, and Mexicans all built communities here over the decades.

If you look closely while walking the trails, you might spot old foundations peeking through the undergrowth - quiet reminders of the families who once called this hollow home. Interpretive signs around the park tell their stories, including the tough living conditions many endured as they sought better lives in a new country.

Natural Features

Phalen Creek meanders through the center of the hollow, creating a natural corridor that wildlife follows through the city. The steep slopes are draped with lush vegetation and mature trees, creating a surprisingly wild atmosphere.

A notable restoration project here involved "daylighting" sections of Phalen Creek that had been diverted underground into storm sewers. Now small pools dot the landscape, attracting wildlife and bringing the sound of frogs on summer evenings - a natural soundtrack that helps mask distant traffic noise. The hollow's sheltered geography creates its own little microclimate, making it feel like you've traveled much farther than just down a set of stairs from the street.

Recreation Opportunities

Exploring Swede Hollow is easiest along its network of trails, including a section of the Bruce Vento Regional Trail that follows an old railway line along the western edge. The paved paths make for a pleasant stroll no matter the season.

Just be prepared for a bit of a workout - getting in and out of the hollow means tackling steep staircases from the surrounding streets. From certain spots, you can catch unique views of downtown Saint Paul peeking above the tree line.

Community and Cultural Activities

The park hosts special events like local art fairs, bringing the community together in this green space. These gatherings showcase both the natural setting and the historical significance of this relatively hidden park.

When you're done exploring, you're just a short walk from the St. Paul Brewery and several coffee shops in the East Side neighborhood.

Preservation Efforts

The Swede Hollow we enjoy today exists thanks to significant restoration work in the 1970s, when dedicated community members transformed what had become a neglected area into a nature preserve. The Saint Paul Garden Club played a key role in these efforts, along with neighborhood organizations.

Preservation continues today as locals work to maintain this special place as both a natural sanctuary and a historical landmark. Their ongoing work helps preserve this piece of Saint Paul's heritage and history.
