About the Location
Historic Significance
Established in 1849 when John Irvine donated the land to the city, Irvine Park stands as one of the oldest parks in Saint Paul. This historic 3.58-acre green space is located in downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota.
The park and its surrounding area were listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and designated a local historic district in 1981.
Park Features
At the heart of the park lies a central fountain, a 1978 replica of the original cast iron fixture. This ornate fountain serves as the park's centerpiece, adding to its Victorian charm.
The park also features a gazebo equipped with electrical outlets, capable of accommodating approximately 10 people. The park gently slopes from east to west and is framed by deciduous trees, creating a peaceful oasis amidst the urban landscape.
Neighborhood Setting
Irvine Park is surrounded by a neighborhood of stately homes, some of which are among the city's earliest frame and stone houses. This blend of natural beauty and historic architecture has made the park a popular destination for both residents and visitors.
Revitalization
Over the years, Irvine Park has experienced both prosperity and decline. In the early 1970s, the city undertook a revitalization effort in collaboration with the neighborhood association.
This initiative included the construction of a new gazebo, reconstruction of the fountain and pool, and the addition of new limestone walls at the corners of the park.
Community Use
Today, Irvine Park serves multiple purposes for the community. It's a favored spot for relaxation, celebrations, exercise, and gatherings.
The park's historic setting and picturesque landscape make it a particularly popular location for outdoor wedding ceremonies and other memorable events.
