About Gateway Park in Saint Paul
Gateway Park is a newly opened public park located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, situated within the Highland Bridge development. The park officially opened in June 2022 and serves as the first of four new parks planned for the area, which was formerly the site of a Ford Motor Company assembly plant.
Spanning 3.6 acres, Gateway Park is positioned at the intersection of Mississippi River Boulevard and Ford Parkway, functioning as a main entrance to the Highland Bridge Parks. Its name reflects its role as a connecting point between Saint Paul and Minneapolis, as well as between the area's past and future.
The park features a mix of recreational and environmental elements. A key attraction is the state-of-the-art skate park, which includes a designated skate bowl and skate trail - the first of its kind in Saint Paul. This addition was inspired by the input of two local teenagers who presented the idea to developers.
In addition to recreational facilities, Gateway Park incorporates important environmental features. The park includes biofiltration basins and a stormwater pond, which serve to clean stormwater from over 16 acres of the Highland Bridge development. These features not only contribute to water management but also provide habitats for local plants and wildlife.
The park's design emphasizes connectivity, with walking paths weaving throughout the space. These paths allow visitors to explore the park's various features and enjoy views of the biofiltration basins and stormwater pond. The park also provides a connection to Mississippi River Boulevard, enhancing accessibility to the surrounding area.
