About the Location
Island Features
Raspberry Island is a small island park located in the Mississippi River in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Situated beneath the Wabasha Street Bridge, it holds the distinction of being Saint Paul's last true island.
The park covers an area of approximately 2 acres and sits at an elevation of 696 feet above sea level.
Historical Background
Originally named for the wild raspberries that grew on it, Raspberry Island has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. The island has undergone several transformations over the years, including a period when it was known as Navy Island due to a small naval base established there in 1949.
In 2007-2008, Raspberry Island underwent a significant $5 million renovation funded by a state grant. This project transformed the once "sun-baked expanse of dirt and rocks" into a welcoming public space.
Landscape and Design
The renovation included strengthening the shoreline with limestone riprap, adding walking paths, and extensive landscaping with over 2,500 trees and flowers, including native plants.
Raspberry Island offers visitors stunning views of downtown Saint Paul and provides a peaceful retreat from the urban environment.
Facilities and Attractions
The island is home to the Minnesota Boat Club, the oldest athletic club in the state, which has been present on the island since 1885. The current boathouse, built in 1910 in Mission Revival style, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
It serves as a unique venue for various events, including weddings and musical performances, particularly at its illuminated bandshell built in 2004 by the Schubert Club of Minnesota.
