About the Location
Urban Oasis on a Hill
Perched atop a hill in Saint Paul's Frogtown neighborhood sits a 12.7-acre spot that opened in 2015. Frogtown Farm and Park isn't your average green space - it offers nice views of St. Paul while serving as a neighborhood hub where health, recreation, food production, and community come together.
Not Just Any Farm
At the heart of this park lies a 5-acre certified organic urban demonstration farm, one of the largest urban farming operations you'll find in the country. This isn't just a place where things grow - it functions as a classroom for sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, and community engagement.
You can learn about various farming traditions and urban growing techniques while you're here. The local farmers practice organic methods and maintain a welcoming atmosphere where diverse cultures and agricultural knowledge come together.
Born from Community Action
This park didn't just happen - it was fought for. Local residents led the charge to secure this green space in their diverse and vibrant neighborhood. The successful initiative brought together the Trust for Public Land, the City of St. Paul, and the Wilder Foundation in a remarkable partnership.
The result is a thoughtfully designed space that balances natural areas, recreational spots, and urban farming. Locals call it "the farm on the hill in the middle of nowhere in the heart of the city."
Natural Beauty Preserved
Walk through the park and you can find yourself among dozens of 50- to 100-year-old trees that were intentionally preserved during development. Open spaces invite you to relax or play, offering a natural retreat within the urban landscape.
The grounds showcase a tapestry of flowers, native Minnesota plants, and even chokecherry trees. The farm portion is managed by a non-profit that keeps the community engaged through various programs and events throughout the year.
Play and Gather
Bring the kids to enjoy the playground with its distinctive features - a beautiful slide, tire swing, and climbing rocks that provide hours of entertainment. Dog owners appreciate the designated areas for walking and running their four-legged friends.
Looking for a peaceful picnic spot? The picnic and BBQ area may be modest in size, but that just means you won't be dealing with large crowds. The intimate setting is meant for small gatherings. The park welcomes visitors daily from 5AM to 10PM and is regularly monitored for everyone's safety.
Winter Wonderland
When winter blankets the city, Frogtown Park transforms into a sledding destination. Its hilltop position creates perfect slopes for sledding adventures, adding a seasonal dimension to this multifaceted community treasure.
