About the Location
Neighborhood Oasis
Located in the eastern part of Saint Paul, Hillcrest Knoll Park is a hidden green space with multiple functions.
Clever urban planning is on full display here - the park features a deep valley design that acts as a water retention area during heavy downpours. During heavy rain, the park helps manage water overflow - a practical design feature.
Beyond its practical water management role, this green space offers a breath of fresh air for nearby residents. You can find paved walking paths winding through grassy expanses, with benches strategically placed for when you need a moment to sit and just... be.
Disc Golf Haven
In 2022, the park got a major upgrade with the addition of a 9-hole disc golf course. With a par of 27 and spanning a modest 1,748 feet, it's a wonderful playground for disc enthusiasts who aren't looking to throw their arm out.
Beginners will find that most holes are under 300 feet - good for practicing approach shots and putting without the challenge of longer courses.
For the more adventurous players, there are unofficial alternative tee positions that essentially transform the course into an 18-20 hole experience. The recent upgrade to concrete tee boxes improves the playing experience.
What You'll Find
There's a practice basket available for putting practice. When nature calls, there's a portable toilet on site - not glamorous, but definitely necessary!
Dog lovers can bring their four-legged friends along, but remember that city rules require dogs to stay leashed at all times. The park offers a few trails that meander through and around the grounds, but the main walking paths follow the street perimeter.
There's a small seating pavilion for when you need some shade, but don't expect playgrounds or designated picnic areas - this park keeps things simple. If you're heading there for disc golf, most players recommend downloading the UDisc app to help navigate the course layout.
Getting There
As part of Saint Paul's park system, Hillcrest Knoll is conveniently located just blocks from the Saint Paul-Maplewood border along Larpenteur Avenue - easy to access for locals and visitors alike.
You'll discover street parking available, but please be mindful of the neighboring homes, especially if you're parking near the dead end street. No one likes to be that inconsiderate park visitor!
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 11PM, giving you plenty of time to enjoy this modest but versatile green space, whether you're throwing discs or simply taking a peaceful stroll.
