About the Location

Historical Significance

Established in 1927, Battlefield Park is one of the oldest and largest parks in the city, covering approximately 54 acres. The park holds significant historical importance as it was the site of Civil War battles fought on May 14 and July 9-17, 1863.

The park preserves a portion of the original Civil War battlefield, including some of the most tangible remains of the extensive fortifications that were erected around Jackson during the conflict. Two acres of the battlefield are specifically maintained for historical preservation, while the rest of the park has been developed for various recreational uses.

Recreational Facilities

Battlefield Park offers a range of modern amenities for community use. The park features sports facilities, including baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, and a soccer field.

For aquatic recreation, there is a swimming pool that was opened in 1975, replacing an earlier pool that had been closed and filled in 1963 during the period of desegregation.

Leisure Activities

The park caters to families and individuals seeking outdoor leisure activities. It includes picnic areas, a pavilion, and a children's playground.

For those interested in fitness, there is a paved walking trail that winds through the park's green spaces. The park is designed to be accessible to all visitors, with ADA-compliant features throughout.

Special Features

A notable feature of the park is the Dorothy Vest Tennis Center, which includes multiple tennis courts and viewing balconies, making it a popular spot for both casual players and organized tennis events.

The park also houses a community center and clubhouse, providing space for various community activities and events.

Visitor Information

While Battlefield Park offers numerous recreational opportunities, it's important to note that some visitors have reported concerns about safety in the surrounding area. As with any urban park, visitors are advised to be aware of their surroundings and preferably visit during daylight hours or busy times.
