About the Location
A Lakeside Escape
Nestled across 140 acres of Columbia landscape, A. Perry Philips Park offers a breath of fresh air for outdoor enthusiasts. You'll come across it just off the Discovery Parkway exit, a stone's throw from Father Tolton Catholic High School. The gates swing open daily from 4:30 AM until 11 PM - well-suited for both early birds and night owls.
The Centerpiece: A Fisherman's Paradise
At the heart of the park sits a 40-acre lake that's not only pretty to look at. Thanks to the Missouri Department of Conservation's Community Assistance Program, the waters stay stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish - though we should mention that catch rates do fluctuate with the seasons.
Fancy a paddle? The lake welcomes non-motorized boats and vessels with electric trolling motors, making it an ideal spot for kayaking adventures. Just remember your life jacket - safety first, always!
Walking with Nature
A 1.4-mile gravel trail hugs the lake's perimeter, great for those seeking a peaceful walk or an invigorating hike. Don't worry about getting tired; thoughtfully placed benches dot the pathway, offering moments to catch your breath and soak in the scenery.
Keep your eyes peeled for the water birds and geese that call this place home. There's also a rain garden adding ecological value, though the park's vegetation leans toward shrubs and smaller plants with just a scattering of larger trees.
Fair warning: the park's open design means it can get quite windy without many trees as windbreakers. But if you're an early riser, you might be treated to some of the most spectacular sunrises Columbia has to offer stretching across the lake's surface.
Get Your Game On
The Columbia Sports Fieldhouse has four hardwood courts that can be used for basketball, pickleball, volleyball, and even archery depending on the day. In 2024, two brand-new tennis courts joined the lineup, primarily serving young players while hosting various summer activities.
Accessible for All
Inclusion is clearly a priority here. An ADA-accessible fishing dock ensures everyone can enjoy dropping a line, regardless of mobility challenges. The accessible boat dock and ramp further extend water activities to all visitors.
The restrooms are well-kept, handicap-equipped, and generally clean - though note they close during winter months when portable toilets take their place. An ADA drinking fountain, picnic shelters, and convenient accessible parking round out the thoughtful amenities.
Growing with the Community
Since opening its gates in 2008, the park continues to evolve through careful planning and partnerships. Grants from the Missouri Department of Conservation have funded essential features like parking areas, sidewalks, and lighting.
A. Perry Philips Park offers a peaceful space where Columbia residents can experience nature, stay active, and spend time outdoors.
